This is the incredible story of Russell Bonner Bentley, an American who went to help defend the city of Donetsk in the Donbas Region of Eastern Ukraine. This is a counter-narrative to all of the lies and misinformation about Russia, Ukraine, and the war in this region.
I travelled to the Independent People’s Republics of Donetsk and Lugansk in the Donbas Region on two occasions in August and October of this year, 2019. I went to find out the truth about the five-year-old war that has been inflicted upon the civilians of these two republics. It was one thing to “know about” the conflict and why, but it was a completely different thing to go there and see with my own eyes and listen to freedom fighters, journalists, and civilians. It was an emotional and overwhelming experience.
My mission since 2016 on four trips to Russia has been to share what I learn through my filmmaking with Americans and people around the world. Russia is not our enemy. My goal is to provide a first-hand alternative to the western narrative that demonizes Russia, the Russian people, and especially President Putin. I let Russians of many demographic groups tell my stories.
